In this part of the world Africa, when we talk about the person and the origin of Satan the first place to seek answers from is the Bible and the Judeo-Christian Religion. In this piece we will not divorce the Bible and Judeo-Christian Religion, also taking into account other sources.

Man through history have proven to be an inquisitive creature, developing notions, religions, and believes, let us see the accounts of Torah a.k.a. {old testament as the Christians will call it,} in Genesis chapter 3 vs 1-5 it reads :
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
In this text Satan is not mentioned, and their’s no supernatural attachment to the serpent, the serpent here was compared to other beast of the field, and it’s conversation with the woman was purely based on their natural opinions.
Furthermore perusing the Torah we find that in the book of Job 1 vs 6 Satan was mentioned as a personality, who is a member of God’s court with other Angels, who attends meetings at will, who carries out special duties for God, not an enemy of God as many will want you to believe, perusing through the Torah I also find in Psalm 109 vs 1-6 .. and Zechariah 3 vs 1-2 that Satan actually is a member of God’s court playing the role of a Prosecuting Attorney.
In 2 Samuel 24 the records states that God’s anger was kindled against Israel at will, and God caused David the king of Israel to conduct census of the people which was against the God’s laws given to them so that He {God} can have ground to punish them, this account was written either by prophet Nathan or Gad who lived at the time of this event around 540 BCE and the people of Israel were severely punished for it, God sent an Angel who smote seventy thousand Israelites in one day…… In 1 Chronicles 21 the same story of King David and the census was retell, around 300 BCE some 240 years latter, this place states that Satan influenced King David to conduct census of the Israelites,…. This is a kind of contradiction of the same story,.. when compared with the account 2 Samuel 24,.. It is therefore logical to state that the records of 2 Samuel which was some 240 year older than the records of 1 Chronicles, is likely to be more correct.
What is the source of evil on earth
A look the following Torah passages will give us the Torah perspective on this question,.. Isaiah 45 :7 KJV: I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
2 Kings 22 : 20 KJV: Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
1 Samuel 19 : 9 AMP: Then an evil spirit from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was playing the harp with his hand. 10 Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he escaped from Saul’s presence, so that Saul only stuck the spear into the wall. Then David fled and escaped that night.
If I understand the above references, God himself is the source of evil and good, in Judaism the understanding they had following Torah records is that God is source of all things, and that Satan is a servant of God who serves as a Prosecuting Attorney, and never His enemy as many will want you to believe.
The influence of Zoroastrianism teachings and believes, which teaches believe in one God {Ahura Mazda} who is the source of all good, and Satan {Angra Mainyu} who is the source of all evil, affected the Jewish believe around 300 BCE it a kind of water-down the stiffness of the Jewish believe, and that notion of Satan being source of all evil crept in.
In the new testament of the Christian Bible, the notion of a Satan being an enemy of God was firmly established,.. Mark 4 : 3-16, Satan being a powerful Being, being the ruler of this world,.. John 14 : 30, who tempted Jesus Christ, is the source of all evil influencing humans to sin against God, the cause of wars, famine, and diseases, being the Red Dragon, Ancient Serpent, who waged war in heaven against Angel Micheal,.. Revelation 12, and who will still war the final war with Jesus Christ, a war he is destined to loose and will be cast into the lake of fire which blazes with brimstone. Revelation 19 :11-21
Having explored the Jewish Bible, the Zoroastrianism teachings and believes, the new testament Christian Bible, I dare state that the Jews never have a Satan that is the source of all evil, rather had a Satan who is a servant of God {YAHWEH}, a member of Gods {YAHWEH} court,.. In Zoroastrianism is where they have a Satan {Angra Mainyu} who is the source of all evil, Zoroastrianism became the first organised religion with such teaching, arguably the source of the widely accepted notion of a Satan that is the source and inventor of evil, sin, sickness, and death,.. Christianity bought this notion and widely spread and rooted it firmly around the world.
